UK Innovator Visa - How to Apply and Get Indefinite Leave to Remain in 2023

What is UK Innovator Visa?

The UK Innovator Visa was created for experienced professionals looking to expand their business acumen to the UK.

Applicants can establish their own business, or invest in an existing UK-based business, including innovative startups slated for expansive growth.

You can apply for an Innovator Visa if:

  • 1. You want to set up or run a business in the UK. This business or idea must be endorsed by an approved body.*
  • 2. You live outside the European Economic Area and Switzerland
  • 3. You are at least 18 years old, have sufficient personal savings, and speak the English.

Additional criteria and details:

  • Applicants must invest a minimum of £50,000 or more in their designated business.

  • The source of capital can be the applicant’s own funds or funding from an outside source.

  • Innovators must work entirely on developing their business ventures and may not take on other employment. This includes anything that effectively amounts to employment such as using their own business to hire out their labour to another employer.

  • Approved candidates can reside in the UK for 3 years at a time and bring their family members (spouses, partners and children under 18) to the UK.

  • After the initial 3 years, Innovators can apply to extend their stay for an additional 3 years or to settle permanently in the UK under indefinite leave to remain (ILR).  Both options require endorsement from an endorsing body.

What is the role of the endorsing body?

*Endorsing bodies include business incubators, accelerators and development organizations that support entrepreneurs in getting their business up and running. Each endorsing body has its own criteria, but the general requirements used to assess an applicant’s business idea are:

  •                 Innovation: The applicant has an original business plan that meets new or existing market needs and/or creates a competitive advantage.
  •                 Viability: The applicant has the necessary skills, knowledge, experience and qualifications to run the business successfully.
  •                 Scalability: There is evidence of structured planning and of potential for job creation and growth into national and international markets.

Once approved, the endorsing body will issue an endorsement letter that the applicant will use to support their visa application.

The applicant will touch base with the business founders at 6, 12 and 24 months to ensure satisfactory progress and issue further endorsements for extension and settlement applications.

Investment Sums for the UK Innovator Visa

Even though the required minimum investment for the Innovator Visa is £50,000, our experience demonstrates that an investment of £200K - £300K is often more successful.

This level of investment opens the door to partnering with credible and promising startups in the UK that have significantly higher chances of expansion and success.

The businesses we work with are all pre-endorsed by a government-authorized endorsing body because they are innovative, viable and scalable. This is determined by stringent criteria and very few businesses make the cut. Pre-endorsement makes the application process faster.
